CROWDER COLLEGE HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCE CENTER

(FEMA SHELTER)

The Project includes 26,000 SF of Chemistry, Biology and Physical Science Laboratories and Classrooms, in addition to the Nursing Department Simulation & Skills Labs. Close coordination was required to integrate this new facility into the existing campus without disturbing existing campus flow. In addition to site constraints, the connection to existing buildings was analyzed so the student's existing interior circulation could be maintained; modifications to existing facilities and vertical circulation between the two facilities were critical for this interior circulation.

The main building body was designed as a FEMA shelter required to withstand an F5 tornado. The shelter could house up to 3,000 occupants including the surrounding public, helping Crowder to better serve its surrounding community. FEMA Grant money and private donations helped fund the project.

Not only was the project simultaneously used for education and FEMA, it was designed to be LEED Silver rated, continuing Crowder College's long standing pledge to be a leader in sustainability.
